Understanding Leather…

Leather goods have long been associated with high-quality, helping to give products a timeless and classic appeal. However, not all leathers are made to the same standards, which means consumers can quickly find their items looking dated or deteriorated.

To the untrained eye, it can be very hard to tell the difference between the various qualities of leather in new products, but over time, these differences can become increasingly more evident. High-quality real leather not only looks considerably better, but it is also far more long-lasting, but what are the different types of leather and how do you know which is best?

Types of leather

When it comes to leather, there are many types of real leather and synthetic options available, but some of the most popular include:

Full Grain Leather
Full-Grain leather is produced from the top part of the hide is often considered the strongest and most durable type, while also holding its shape much more effectively than other styles. Thanks to its robust nature, it is often used in products such as bags as is able to carry lots of weight. Equally, as it is left in a more natural state, it helps to ensure that each item looks truly unique and features no splitting.

Top Grain Leather
Very similar to Full Grain, Top Grain is from the same part of the hide but has been buffed back to remove any imperfections. Despite this, it is still one of the highest grades of leather and is often just as durable as Full Grain, but with the added advantage of being slightly more lightweight and flexible.

Genuine Leather
Products that are classed as Genuine Leather often feature leather that has had some form of treatment applied to it, but not to the level of coated or painted leather. Although it is a form of real leather, it is the cheapest form of it, which means it will not hold its shape as well as Full or Top-grain.

However, Genuine Leather is still a great choice and will mould with you over time, whilst lasting for a very long time thanks to it being able to age well.

Vegan Leather
Vegan leather has grown in popularity over recent years, mirroring the sustainable lifestyle trend that is being seen across the world. Vegan Leather is more environmentally friendly and is typically made from materials such as pineapple leaves, fruit waste, and recycled plastic.

Although not usually as strong as traditional styles of leather, so is not as useful for carrying weight, it is still a highly durable solution and is a fantastic option for shorter-term usage on items such as journals.
